【碧海圖鑑—海洋生物篇#4：海月貝Blue Ocean Collection-Marine Wildlife Series #4: Windowpane oyster】

在上一集碧海圖鑑中，我們介紹了潮間帶蟹類🦀，新一年我們將會介紹兩種新發現的「海月貝」（Placuna spp.）!

香港研究團隊再發現新物種🔍！香港浸會大學生物學系教授邱建文教授率領的研究團隊早前在大嶼山水域和中國沿海地區🌊發現兩個新物種，命名為「河口海月」（Placuna aestuaria）和「玻璃海月」（Placuna vitream），令「海月貝屬」在全球的物種數量，由五個增加至七個⬆️。

什麼是海月貝❓
「海月貝」也被稱為「鏡貝」，「明瓦」或「卡皮斯貝」，是一種鹹水雙殼貝類，屬於「雲母蛤科」（Placunidae）下的「海月貝屬」（Placuna）。海月貝是可食用的，但其貝殼的價值更高。因為海月貝有漂亮的半透明銀色貝殼，所以被廣泛用於製作窗戶、珠寶首飾📿，以至燈罩和吊燈等裝飾品。

是次在本港發現新物種「河口海月」，其拉丁文名稱「aestuaria」的意思是「河口」，突顯這海月貝新種的棲息地是處於珠江口的河口水域一帶🏞️。這品種同樣在米埔自然保護區的基圍被團隊發現。

另一個新物種「玻璃海月」（Placuna vitream）有着仿似玻璃和珍珠般⚪的貝殼，故被名為「vitream」，拉丁文有「像玻璃般」的意思。浸大團隊於 2023在海南的漁民攤檔首先採購得樣本。隨後，團隊於海南的潮間帶以及從廈門採集到更多野生樣本，反映玻璃海月貝可能廣泛分布於南中國海，包括香港海域。

In the previous episode of the Blue Ocean Collection, we introduced the intertidal crabs 🦀. At the beginning of 2025, we shift our focus to the two newly discovered windowpane oyster/capiz shell species (Placuna spp.).

The research team led by Professor Qiu Jianwen from the Department of Biology at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has discovered🔍 two new species in Lantau waters and coastal regions of China🌊, which they named Placuna aestuaria and Placuna vitream, thus increasing the global species count of the genus Placuna from five to seven⬆️.

What is Placuna ❓
Windowpane shell or capiz shell are a small group of saltwater bivalves belonging to the genus Placuna under the family Placunidae.
They are edible but their shells are more valuable which have been used for thousands of years as a substitute for glass. These beautiful translucent shells have been widely used in making windows, jewelry 📿 and decorative items such as lampshades and chandeliers.

The new species Placuna aestuaria was discovered from Hong Kong. Its name “aestuaria” is derived from the Latin word for “estuarial”, highlighting its habitat, the Pearl River Estuary 🏞️. The research team also found this species in a gei wai of the Mai Po Nature Reserve.

Photographs are an important source of information for historical research📜. Apart from the photographer's point of view, we can also use our knowledge of history to uncover undiscovered details🔎.

We often use photographs to tell the story of the harbour, its vessels and its people🌊. The lantern slides and photographs 🎞️ in the ‘Across Victoria Harbour’ exhibition, loaned by Mr. Ko Tim-keung, are all ‘positive’ and have the same colour as the real scenery. Similar to the photo of Brian Brake from the 60's in the current ‘Voyage Through Time’ exhibition, a group of dockworkers use their sweaty hands 💦 to load and unload daily necessities and production materials for various industries, quietly contributing to Hong Kong's economic prosperity and development. The Harbour is not only for freight transport, but also for passenger transport 🚢. The Star Ferry and vehicular ferries frequently plied the Victoria Harbour in the past.

「港口一直在變化，但它仍然是香港的中心點。如果拿掉港口，香港就會不一樣了。」攝影師艾思滔曾在一次媒體訪問中表示。📷

「歳月遊蹤」展覽展示了 1940 年代至 1970 年代期間，由 Hedda Morrison, Brian Brake 及 Edward Stokes (艾思滔) 在香港拍攝的照片。他們三人各有緣由到訪香港，加上不同的生活背景，成就了鏡頭下獨特而美麗的香港。Edward Stokes於1948年5月在澳洲出生，兒時在香港長大。1970年代後期，當時居於澳洲的Stokes自學成為攝影師，早年曾獲澳洲期刊委託拍攝香港的人文風貌。Stokes 於1993年重回香港，現時主理「香港影像留真計劃」。🌊

"The harbour is always changing, but it remains the central point of Hong Kong. Without it, the city would be entirely different," photographer Edward Stokes once said in an interview. 📷 (The English translation version from the Chinese media coverage)

Voyage Through Time is an exhibition of captivating photographs taken in Hong Kong between the 1940s and 1970s by celebrated photographers Hedda Morrison, Brian Brake and Edward Stokes. They each had unique reasons for visiting or staying in Hong Kong, and their diverse backgrounds offer fascinating perspectives on the city through their lenses. Edward Stokes was born in Australia in May 1948, but he grew up in Hong Kong. During the late 1970s, by then living in Australia, Stokes became a self-taught photographer. One early project was an Australian journal photo story about Hong Kong. Stokes returned to Hong Kong in 1993. He is now leading the Hong Kong Photo Heritage Programme’s projects.

【 🎄聖誕知多點 - 海洋的小小聖誕樹Stories of Christmas - Underwater Christmas Tree】

聖誕臨近，相信你今年已經看過不少聖誕樹，但你知道海底有一種很像聖誕樹的生物，名叫「聖誕樹管蟲」嗎? 🌊🎄

聖誕樹管蟲 (Christmas tree worms)
又名大旋鰓蟲，牠有兩個像是聖誕樹的鰓冠，這對「聖誕樹」主要用作濾捕食物和呼吸。

這種管蟲小小的，只有三至四厘米左右，色彩斑斕。常見顏色有黄色、橙色、藍色、紫色和白色等，十分顯眼。牠的身體大部分都藏在珊瑚中，受驚時兩棵「聖誕樹」更會迅速收回管腔內，非常可愛。

隨著節日臨近，大家都可能参與各種節慶活動🥂 。希望大家在慶祝的同時，都不忘減少廢物，愛護我們的海洋🌊 ，祝各位聖誕快樂！

Christmas is coming! You may have already seen lots of Christmas trees this year, but do you know there is an animal in the deep sea that looks just like Christmas tree? 🌊🎄

Christmas tree worms
Also known as Spirobranchus giganteus by scientists, Christmas tree worm has two crown-liked structures resembling Christmas trees. These tiny “Christmas trees” are actually used to breath and filter food from water.

Christmas tree worm is small, only about three to four centimeters long, but it is very eye-catching. Common colors include yellow, orange, blue, purple, and white, making it quite easy to spot. Most of its body is hidden within the coral, and when it senses danger, the two "Christmas trees" will quickly retract into the tube, which is very interesting.

There are many celebrations 🥂 as the festive season approaches. While you are celebrating, please do not forget to reduce waste, as without your help, our ocean 🌊 may soon be full of waste and all the marine wildlife, including the Christmas tree worms, may disappear. 【講座回顧 | 海洋科學家講座系列─ 海螺的秘密生活 Talk Recap | Meet-the-Marine-Scientist Series: The Secret Lives of Marine Snails】

我們於上星期六，聯同一班海洋科學家🔬，包括：香港大學太古海洋科學研究所Gray A Williams教授及嶺南大學科學教研組的Tommy Hui教授和Sarah Lau博士，舉辦了以海螺生態為主題的講座🎤，帶來了豐富的資訊和有趣的互動工作坊！

活動結束後，我們把海螺送回牠們居住的生境。
考考你，知道今次介紹的海螺平日居住在哪裡？

位於陸地與海洋交接的潮間帶，岩岸每天有著強烈的環境變化，因此對動物而言，岩岸絕非舒適的地方，在這生境存活要面對海浪🌊、溫度🌡️和潮汐等等嚴苛挑戰。縱然如此，香港岩岸還是超過400種生物的家🏠。為了生活在岩岸，牠們演變出五花八門的對策，有的躲在縫隙和陰暗處以避免曝曬☀️，也有像濱螺透過分泌黏液緊緊黏着岩石，甚至爬到彼此的殼上，形成「螺塔」，以減少接觸岩石來降溫。

香港的海岸線以岩岸為主，不同海浪沖刷程度的岩岸會出現不同的岩岸群落。若想了解沖刷度高的岩岸，可以前往石澳和大浪灣；若是沖刷度低的岩岸，大潭和吐露港內的海岸則是好去處。無論到哪個岩岸觀察，請不要打擾生物或破壞其棲息地，並且量力而為，安全至上⛑️。

Last Saturday, we invited a group of marine scientists🔬, including Professor Gray A Williams from the Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS) of the University of Hong Kong, and Professor Tommy Hui and Dr Sarah Lau from the Science Unit of Lingnan University, to organise a workshop about the ecology of rocky shore snails. Providing everyone with rich information, the lecture🎤 also had an engaging interactive section!

After the event, we brought the snails back to their habitat.
Do you know where do they usually live?

Rocky shore is a unique environment located in the intertidal zone where the land meets the sea. Rocky shores experience strong environmental changes every day which are far from comfortable for animals to live in; survival in this habitat means facing harsh challenges such as waves🌊, high/low temperature 🌡️ and tides. Despite these, Hong Kong rocky shores are still home🏠 to over 400 species of organisms. These organisms have evolved various strategies to deal with the harsh environment. Some of them hide in crevices and shaded areas to escape from the sun☀️, and some, like periwinkles, secrete mucus to cling tightly to rocks or even climb onto each other to form "snail towers", to reduce the contact with the hot rock surface.

Same Location, Different Times and Spaces — Together Experiencing the Passage of Time.

Voyage Through Time is an exhibition of captivating photographs taken in Hong Kong between the 1940s and 1970s by celebrated photographers Hedda Morrison, Brian Brake and Edward Stokes. In addition to the framed photos showcase, another highlight is the digital display featuring contrasting “past and present” photographs of the harbour, its maritime life and surroundings. The black-and-white photos were taken by Hedda Morrison in 1946–1947, while the colour photographs were captured a few years ago by Rogan Coles. As visitors browse through the digital display, they can witness how Hong Kong has evolved over time and earned its status as one of Asia's most vibrant cities. Additionally, the exhibition features aerial photographs taken by photographer Anton Aleshin in 2024, showcasing the diverse aspects of the port and shipping industry, further enriching the content of the exhibition.
