About the Event
On 23 June 2024, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) offers free admission to celebrate the Day of the Seafarer as to raise public awareness and pay tribute to seafarers. A series of activities and souvenirs will be offered for children and their families to enjoy and learn more about the industry and maritime history in Hong Kong, including docent tours, game booths, marine movie screening, self-portrait workshop, storytelling, treasure hunt worksheets for children and much more. Highlighted activities such as “Explore the Marine World with the Robot” and “Simulator Experience” will also be offered.
Marine transportation is the core of the global supply chain and plays an important role in daily transportation. The annual Day of the Seafarer was established by the International Maritime Organization in 2010, aimed to show appreciation to the work of seafarers around the world, show gratitude for their contributions to international maritime trade and world economic development, and enhance public attention to maritime affairs.
Sponsored by Hong Kong-based Pacific Basin Shipping Limited, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Seamen’s Union and Maritime and Aviation Training Fund (MATF) of Transport and Logistic Bureau, HKMM opens its door for free to the public on 23 June 2024 to show gratitude to seafarers and share maritime knowledge to the public. Pacific Basin is one of the world’s leading owners and operators of modern Handysize and Supramax dry bulk vessels. Visitors can talk to young cadets learning more about seafarers' daily work and shipping knowledge, and experience knot-tying, sextant and compass navigation from the professional seafarers at Pacific Basin game booths.
Highlighted events include “Explore the Marine World with the Robot”. Our robot will bring you to an adventure in the marine world to meet marine wildlife and explore their habitats. Through this S.T.R.E.A.M. experience, children can learn more about our Ocean and the fundamental principles of coding. Moreover, “Simulator Experience” allows visitors to steer a variety of ships in our venue, including container barge, high-speed boat or even the famous historic Star Ferry, and learn the various roles of seafarers in the simulator to experience an immersive and authentic “sea journey” through Hong Kong waters and the Victoria Harbour waterfront!
