About the Event
On 25 June 2023, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum celebrates the International Day of the Seafarer with free admission and a series of family activities to raise public awareness and show appreciation for the work of seafarers.
The annual International Day of the Seafarer was established by the International Maritime Organization in 2010 as a tribute to the 1.6 million seafarers around the world for their essential contribution to world trade and the global economy. Around 90% of everything we eat, use and consume is brought to us by sea – even during COVID-19 when measures to contain the pandemic around the world posed extra hardships on ships’ crews, including making it very difficult for ship owners to change crews and get their seafarers home.
Sponsored by Hong Kong-based Pacific Basin Shipping Limited, in collaboration with the Marine Department, Hong Kong Seamen’s Union and LumiVoce, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum opens its door for free to the public on 25 June 2023 to celebrate this meaningful day. Pacific Basin is one of the world’s leading owners and operators of modern Handysize and Supramax dry bulk vessels. Come talk to young cadets and experienced seafarers at Pacific Basin’s booths to learn more about their lives and shipping knowledge! Visitors can also experience knot-tying, sextant and compass navigation from the professional seafarers while winning souvenirs.
In addition, visitors can freely join in a myriad of family activities, including guided tours led by docents around the museum, treasure hunt, hand painting workshop etc. Moreover, marine life talks are scheduled to share knowledge with visitors about different marine ecologies and to introduce special marine animals and their habits.
Furthermore, game booths presented by the Hong Kong Seamen’s Union will be set up for children and their families to interact with the Union’s youth volunteers and learn about the life of a seafarer. A refuse collection vessel demonstration provided by the Marine Department will showcase the scavenging and collection of marine floating refuse and promote the importance of maintaining cleanliness at sea. Visitors can see how the vessels clean the harbour and learn about the daily operation of clean-up at sea and the latest technology applied to marine cleansing.
One special event will also take place at the museum. LumiVoce will have its first in-person award ceremony - 2023 Voices for the Planet Award Ceremony - in the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. The Voices for the Planet education programme inspires young people to love and protect wildlife and biodiversity by creating their own wildlife artworks in five different art forms including drawing, writing, photography, videography and singing.
