Jockey Club Anchor Plaza
Expect to open to the public by September 2025
The Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza has been funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust as a 2022 Chief Executive’s Community Project. This free access plaza is located on the Hong Kong Island harbourfront, behind Central Piers 9 and 10, and adjacent to the museum. The project is expected to be completed and open to the public by September 2025.
A learning space to showcase
Hong Kong's rich maritime cultural heritage
The plaza will provide a brand-new interactive public learning space to showcase Hong Kong's rich maritime cultural heritage. In addition to displaying the anchor of the "Seawise Giant,” the plaza will feature a walkthrough pavilion with immersive ArtTech displays and interactive screens, allowing visitors to delve deeper into Hong Kong's marine life and maritime history. The project aims to create a vibrant space for education, entertainment and art. Visitors can not only appreciate Hong Kong’s significant maritime cultural heritage but also enjoy an immersive learning experience through the use of art, technology and interactive elements.
The Hong Kong Maritime Museum is a cultural link connecting Hong Kong with its rich maritime history, art, and science. The completion of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza will further expand the museum's reach, allowing the public to benefit.
The 36-ton "Seawise Giant" anchor, which originally had 20 shackles of chain (about 27.4 m per shackle), is 7 m long in the shank, 4.45 m across the flukes and 1.13 m thick.
This anchor was once installed on "Seawise Giant," the largest cargo vessel ever built. The ship, once owned by Hong Kong shipping magnate Mr. C.Y. Tung, and subsequently sailing under a variety of other owners and names, was dismantled on the beaches of Gujarat, India, in 2010 after 35 years of service. Its anchor was later acquired by the museum's Emeritus Chairman, Mr. Anthony Hardy BBS. It was a considerable challenge to move the anchor from Gujarat to the Government Dockyard in Hong Kong, where it has been in temporary storage since June 2010. The anchor stands as a symbol of the vessel’s former glory, embodying Hong Kong's rich and storied maritime heritage.

Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum
In 2025, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the theme of “Anchoring the Past, Navigating the Future,” coinciding with the arrival of the anchor of the "Seawise Giant" at the plaza. Over the past 20 years, the museum has showcased Hong Kong's unique maritime culture and history and has become a bridge connecting the past with the future.

The HKMM team aims to create learning experiences related to the maritime culture. (S.T.E.A.M. is an abbreviation of S- Science, T- Technology, E- Engineering, A- Arts, M- Mathematics)

During the closure of the museum, social media campaign “An Object a Week” was launched in April 2020. Mr. Tam Kwong Lim led our audience on a virtual gallery walk, featuring 4 highlighted objects from the Canton Trade and Opium War.

In a recent collaboration with the Vocational Training Council (VTC), students have produced an 360-degrees interactive video featuring various exhibits at HKMM. This professionally edited video provides an immersive visiting experience during the closure of the museum. To navigate, use the arrow keys on your keyboard or pan around your mobile device.

Funded by Maritime and Aviation Training Fund (MATF), Transport and Housing Bureau. Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) and Lighthouse Heritage Research and Connections Project (LHRC) of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), co-organized the programme “Seeing in the Dark: Stories of Hong Kong Harbour and Lighthouse”. This online exhibition is part of the project, and it serves as long-term learning resources of Hong Kong’s lighthouse and its maritime history and development.

Our Special Programme Resources offer exclusive learning materials and activities designed to enhance your understanding of maritime history and culture. These resources support our unique educational programs and special events, providing participants with a rich, wide-ranging multi-disciplinary learning experience.
In collaboration with Education Bureau and Faculty of Humanities, and The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), we offer a comprehensive induction course for newly-joined history teachers, focusing on maritime history and its relevance to the curriculum.

Marine Ecosystem and Our Daily Lives
As part of the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan to explore local marine environmental issues, and with the grant from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, 2 talks on sustainable seafood choices and marine pollution were organised in mid-October 2018, together with a learning booklet and pledge card for children to enhance the understanding of the subject matter to a wider audience.
