How Hong Kong Became A Major Maritime Centre

When Hong Kong was liberated after the Japanese surrender in 1945, there was widespread malnutrition and the population was only a fraction of its size before the war. Many people expected the colony to become a quiet backwater.

People gradually returned, however, and some of the home-grown manufacturing industries which had started to spring up before the war were re-established. Of the 600 factories active before the outbreak of hostilities, it is estimated that 360 of them had re-opened by the end of 1946. Manufacturing was given a massive boost when the communists took over in China in 1949 and refugees, both rich and poor, flooded into Hong Kong......
